Module summary

The module fulfils the first part of the practice placement curriculum

Objectives

- To achieve an analytic and reflective understanding of relevant theory and how to apply evidence informed reflective practice.
- To complete a shadowing experience and a Fitness to Practice process.
- To complete a 70 day practice placement in line with the Professional Capabilities Framework and Standards of Proficiency at first level placement standards.

Learning outcomes
1. Students will develop an analytic and evaluative approach to a range of social work practice theory and how to apply evidence informed reflective practice.
2. Students will develop a critically reflective knowledge of the theory of diversity and anti-oppressive practice in social work.
3. Students will develop an analytic approach to the historical framework of social work in England and Wales.
4. Students will develop and demonstrate a synthesis of knowledge of the theories and skills of assessment, planning and review and interviewing and communication in social work.
5. Students will develop and demonstrate an analytic approach to being a social work practitioner at first level in line with the Professional Capabilities Framework and Standards of Proficiency
6. Students will develop an understanding of and application of professional values and ethics including the HCPC guidance on conduct and ethics for students
7. Students will develop an understanding of the expectations of the Professional Capabilities Framework, the Standards of Proficiency and be able to apply professional values and ethics in practice

Syllabus

- Understanding Readiness to practice. Becoming a professional. HCPC guidance on conduct and ethics for students Service user
perspectives. Managing self.
- Social work and the welfare state - what is social work? International comparisons
- Diversity and anti-oppressive approaches, labelling, stigma, stereotypes, analysis of our 'own stories'. Understanding ourselves and the
implications for practice.
- Interpersonal skills and communication; where do we start from and what influences our and our service users' communication?
Psychodynamic perspectives - defence mechanisms, transference and projection. Person Centred Approaches
- Social work theory; Why Theory? What is reflection? What is the reflective practitioner?
- Task Centred Practice,

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be supported and monitored in the teaching sessions for the module.
Students will complete a summative video interview exercise with a service user.
Lectures and tutorials will provide formative evidence of student progress
Exercises towards completion of the skills audit providing evidence of skills achieved and pointers for future development
The peer and tutor feedback in tutorials will provide further evidence of progress and should show gaps in knowledge to be addressed
The portfolio and essay in November provides evidence of capability in relation to module outcomes.
Tutor groups support the student prior to placement.
In addition they will be monitored and supported on placement by their personal tutor.
The initial agreement meeting and the mid-way support the student on placement and monitor progress towards the Professional Capabilities
Framework at first placement level.

Students must pass the Readiness to practice individual interview before going out on the 70 day placement. Students will be allowed two attempts at the individual interview. Failure at first attempt will not jeopardise the overall mark for the module. There will normally only be two attempts at placement. A placement resit will normally be via an extension to the placement agreed at an Action Plan Meeting to determine the shortfall in key roles and units. Such an extension will be for a maximum of 30 days and will normally directly follow the placement Only in exceptional circumstances to be determined by the exam board will students be allowed to retake the whole placement Placement performance will be managed and assessed by the practice educator. The practice educator will decide on professional capability and pass or fail the student in their practice educator report. The practice element must be passed. Students will have a maximum of two attempts at the Portfolio. Failure at first attempt at the portfolio will jeopardise the overall mark for the module. Failure at first attempt at the portfolio will jeopardise the overall mark for the module The Portfolio will be marked by the personal tutor All elements of the module have to be passed to complete the module. Students will be offered tutorial support prior to submission of portfolio, however the submitted portfolio remains the responsibility of the student Readiness to Practice interview format; In year one assessment of Readiness to Practice is done via an assessment in a 30 minute individual interview which determines whether the student has met the required standard to go out on placement. In line with Social Work Reform Board guidance the individual interview process will be monitored and quality assured by the Practice Assessment Panel which includes representatives from service users, carers and employers The assessment includes the following:- i) Satisfactory evidence of 'shadowing' an experienced social worker ii) Satisfactory completion of a skills audit exercise demonstrating learning from skills-based workshops and reflection and evaluation of previous experience and learning. iii) A satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service check undertaken by the University of Leeds. iv) A satisfactory Self Declaration of Health and Occupational Health screening v) A satisfactory understanding of the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for students vi) A satisfactory understanding of the HCPC Guidance on Standards of Proficiency vii) A satisfactory understanding of the HCPC Professional Capabilities Framework viii) A satisfactory understanding of Service Users and Carers perspectives. ix) Satisfactory attendance. x) Satisfactory completion of the student Progress Students will be set this work in Semester 2a Week 1 and be required to hand it in and complete their individual interview by the end of Semester 2a Week 12. Students who fail this will be given a further attempt to complete before going out on placement. It is the student's responsibility to conform to the requirements of the readiness to practice assessment. This includes following up DBS and any health requirements. Students will be allowed two attempts at the individual interview and submission of evidence of completion of the above material. Failure at first attempt will not jeopardise the mark for the module. Students who fail the readiness to practice requirements at first attempt will not be allowed to begin placement. Students who fail the readiness to practice requirements at second attempt will be required to leave the programme.
