Module summary

This module, together with LING1080 Linguistics 2, covers the core concepts in Linguistics within six strands, three of which are explored within each module. The strands covered in Linguistics 1 are: an Introduction to Language, the Structure of Language, and the Sounds of Language.Students will learn what makes human language unique, and will be introduced to the structured way words combine into sentences, how this structure contributes to defining meaning, how sounds are produced, how these sounds are organised in language systems to create larger units (words).

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate a sound knowledge of some of the specificities of human language and of its structure, both at syntactic and phonological level;
- understand the concept of theories and models; Systematise data according to the principles of rules and theories;
- show an initial grasp of essay writing, and justifying their analysis of data through an understanding of the importance of argument and coherence in academic work.

They should also be prepared for the application of this technical knowledge to the interdisciplinary areas which will be tackled in LING1080 Linguistics 2.

Syllabus

The strands covered in Linguistics 1 are:
- an Introduction to Language
- the Structure of Language
- the Sounds of Language.

Students will learn what makes human language unique, and will be introduced to its analysis on two levels.
- At the syntactic level, it will be shown that words combine into sentences in a structured fashion, and that this structure contributes to defining meaning.
- At the phonetic and phonological level, students will learn how sounds are produced and how these sounds are organised in language systems to create larger units (words).
