Year running 2019/20

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

-Introduce and develop an understanding of basic Earth and Environmental Science concepts.
-Develop student's ability to perform practicals and fieldwork using the skills of observation, and the ability to record and interpret observations.
-Develop understanding of the following Earth Science components: geological concepts and processes (dynamic Earth; plate tectonic theory; basic mineralogy and petrology; Earth history and palaeontology), and the fostering of basic geological skills (rock and mineral identification; O.S. and geological map reading).
-Develop understanding of the following Environmental Science components: To develop awareness and knowledge of key environmental issues and the science behind them.

Learning outcomes
-Describe the basic concepts involved in global tectonics, geological structures, the rock cycle and fossils and palaeoenvironments;
-Have an appreciation for the dynamic nature of planet Earth and the expansiveness of geological time;
-Interpret and critically evaluate information about environmental science issues.

Skills outcomes
-identify a range of minerals, fossils, and igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock samples.
-make observations and measurements from field activities and geological maps using geological knowledge and appropriate vocabulary.
-describe the basic concepts involved in environmental issues associated with the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere
