Module summary
This module will explore child development from a number of perspectives including relationships with the environment, family, culture and society. It will also consider the children and young people's resilience in relation to all of the above.Objectives
The purpose of the module is to develop the students' critical understanding of child development including:-Critical thinking in relation to nature versus nurture debate
-Child development from a social, cultural, emotional and physical perspective
-Evaluation of basic theories in relation to development of attachment, communication and resilience.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the student will be able to evaluate critically and have knowledge of:
1. Children and young people's physical development
2. Children and young people's social development
3. Children and young people's development from differing cultural perspectives
4. Children and young people's development in relation to their environment and carers
5. Theories of child development in relation to practice
Syllabus
-Child development social, physical, intellectual and emotional from 0-19
-External factors impacting on the developing child
-Understanding children and young people's responses to their world
-Introduction of a range of relevant theories in relation to physical and cognitive developmental research of children 0-19
-Opportunity to draw on ongoing work experience and to apply and test learning in the work setting

The use of blended learning will require the students to engage in weekly preparation at their own pace. The students will be encouraged to use the online materials and read appropriate texts, academic books and peer review articles to expand their learning. They will also be encouraged to develop learning sets to enhance their own learning experience.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the follow up seminars. Access to tutors is also available via tutorials and e-mail.Methods of assessment
