Module summary
- Language classes enable the basic structures of Arabic to be explained in an interactive environment- Language exercises enable the student to develop competent skills in the language- Regular class tests and homework ensure that progress can be carefully monitored throughout the course- Tutorials provide an opportunity for practising oral and aural language skills and for the correction of errors- End-of-module examinations provide a measure of the overall achieved level.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- demonstrate an understanding of the principles of phonology and script
- demonstrate a basic use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening
- demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend simple texts on familiar topics
- demonstrate the ability to speak about oneself and carry out limited conversations on familiar topics
- demonstrate the ability to translate and write paragraphs on familiar topics
- form and understand basic grammar and syntax of Modern Standard Arabic
- show an awareness of some aspects of the culture of the Arab world.
Learning outcomes
- Familiarity with some of the differences between formal and spoken Arabic.
- A basic knowledge of some aspects of Arab culture.
Skills outcomes
- Development of time management skills and ability to demonstrate how to conduct independent study, as well as how to work in pairs and groups in conversation and on text-based work.
- Studying independently.
- Working in pairs and groups.
- Students will also demonstrate competent use of the Arabic language.
Syllabus
- Introducing the Arabic alphabet and sounds
- Covering basic grammar and the basics of the Arabic sentence: the verb, subject, adjective, adverb, al-idafa etc
- Using interactive language learning approach; speaking and listening skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair and group discussion, also by using a range of audio-visual materials
- Acquiring a usable Arabic vocabulary
- Exploring some aspects of Arab culture and society.
