Objectives

This module will introduce students to the study of Islamic history and civilisation up to the medieval period.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the major events of Islamic history from the 6th century to the Medieval Ages;
2. outline the religious, social, political and economic variations within Islamic civilisations during this period;
3. identify and evaluate critically the features of Arabic and Islamic culture during this period.


Syllabus

The module offers an introduction to the study of Islamic history and civilisation and will focus on the following:

1. Pre-Islamic Arabia
2. The life of the prophet Mohammed
3. The Age of the Right-Guided Caliphs
4. The Umayyad and Abbasid Dynasty
5. The Fatimids in Egypt
6. Medieval Arabic and Islamic culture under the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasty
7. Introduction to Islamic philosophy, poetry and literature.
