Objectives

The module will provide students with opportunities to develop:
-understanding of core biological functions underpinning health
-appreciation of the impact and influence of lifestyle and environment on health
-ability to apply biological knowledge in the context of a patient-centred approach and problem-based learning activities.

Learning outcomes
Understanding the concept of human health and anatomy & physiology as it relates to:
-Homeostasis
-Maintenance and disruption
-Impacts and influences of lifestyle/environment/genetics on health and well being


Syllabus

-Introduction to the concepts of health and well being and principles of intervention
-Cells as functional units of life
-Introduction to negative feedback mechanisms drawing upon clinical examples
-Infection and immunity
-Genetics and inheritance
-Maturity and aging processes
-Basic anatomy and physiology
-Lifestyle choices
-Body systems: cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, immune/lymphatic, musculoskeletal, nervous, reproductive, respiratory

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Seminars and practicals will provide opportunity for regular monitoring of students’ progress. This will also be informed by quizzes and other examples of formative assessment that will be used to check student’s engagement with work set in between teaching sessions.
