Module summary

This is an opportunity for experienced creative writers to develop an extended piece of writing: a collection of short stories, poems, the beginning of a novel or script, perhaps even a graphic novel, or a web-based story.You may have an idea for a creative project that you've always wanted to try, but also feel that you would benefit from being part of a group of like-minded people, frequently giving and receiving feedback on projects in progress, with the guidance of an experienced creative writing tutor.This module is an opportunity to develop your writing skills through a lively and dedicated workshop. You will complete a substantial piece of creative writing of your choice. And you will be surrounded by people who, like you, are excited about writing and creating new work.The module is assessed wholly by coursework and requires your active and regular attendance and participation.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide the opportunity to produce an extended piece of creative writing from a chosen genre.

On completion of this module students will:
- produce, develop and revise imaginative writing to a professional standard;
- participate effectively in peer-reviews and tutor-led writing workshops;
- demonstrate independence in their writing;
- demonstrate an understanding of the nature and purpose of the workshop and peer feedback as a feature of creative writing pedagogy;
- identify and critically evaluate writing techniques and conventions;
- be familiar with, and able to effectively employ a range of formal techniques for writing;
- have extended their knowledge, critical understanding and practical experience of writing;
- have expanded upon critical reading skills in relation to their own writing, that of other students, and work by published author;
- have produced a substantial piece of creative work.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students will know:
- how to effectively plan, draft and complete creative work;
- a variety of narrative technique and conventions in writing, particularly in relation to their individual project;
- how to locate themselves in the wider context of prior and current work that is similar to their own;
- how to give critical feedback to their peers, and how to respond to feedback that they have received from their peers.

Skills outcomes
The ability to write creatively and to explore and understand critical aspects in relation to this.

Experience of having written creatively before, either on other writing electives, courses, or at home.


Syllabus

The syllabus explores:
- Creating personal development plans and using these effectively to navigate the creative process
- The development and uses of a reflective blog
- Considering the pace and progression of collections of writing and/or longer pieces such as narrative poems, full-length scripts and novels
- Establishing peer review techniques
- Effectively employing structure to both the creative practice and the creative project
- The importance of self-directed learning and creative development
- The completion of a substantial creative writing project
