Module summary

This module uses sociological theories and debates as a means of understanding the changing world of work. The subject is analysed from three perspectives - hard and soft skills in contemporary organisations, management culture and the reshaping of the organisation and control of work.

Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to sociological theories and debates relevant to contemporary workplace change. The overall goal is to equip students with new ways of perceiving the management and organisation of work, as well as an understanding how the world of work is changing.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Recognise, evaluate and comment on how sociology and organisational theory has helped the analysis of management, work and organisational structures
- Explain and analyse the interrelationships between people and the broader institutional context in which organisations are embedded

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Coverage of the contrast between ‘modernist’ and ‘critical’ perspectives and their application in analysing contemporary issues relating to management. work and organisational structures.
