Module summary

This module aims to provide you with an introduction to the integrated study of the key concepts and underlying theories relating to organisational change management. The module examines theories of change and development as they apply to organisations, groups and individuals. It also examines the way in which different theoretical perspectives on change are reflected in the range of approaches that can be applied to the diagnosis and solving of problems in organisations.

Objectives

This module aims to provide an introduction to the integrated study of the key concepts and underlying theories relating to organisational change management. The module also aims to explain the relevance of such theories for practising managers.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- interpret and explain the concept of organisational change
- identify, explain and critique different theoretical accounts of this concept, together with different methodological approaches to its study
- identify ways of managing issues arising from internally and/or externally imposed organisational change
- identify how people can facilitate or resist change
- investigate an organisational change initiative and propose a diagnostic response

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- identify, explain and critique the practical implications and usefulness of such theoretical accounts to today's managers


Syllabus

Indicative content:
Attention is given to the critical issues that need to be considered when developing a plan for change, for example:
- stakeholder management
- communication
- motivating others to change
- training and development
- maintaining control during the change process
- choice and sequencing of interventions.
Attention is also given to some of the main ways of intervening in organisations to secure change.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback is supplied as follows:
1. The workshop sessions provide opportunities for interaction with other students and the module tutor. These interactions enable students to benchmark how well they are mastering the course materials relative to others.
2. Most of the 30 chapters of the required course text contain practical exercises that test students’ ability to relate the theories and concepts they will be studying to the everyday practice of change management.
3. For 2011-12 there will be self assessment questions are posted on the VLE.
