Objectives

The module aims to highlight the contribution which structured methodologies can make to the project management process (PMM) in organizations as well as highlighting the complex and social nature of the environment within which such PMM are used. The module covers the selection of projects aligned with strategy, the management of programmes and the management of projects for both project and project management success.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students should be able to critically assess:
- the contribution that structured project management methodologies can make to businesses at the strategic level (portfolio management), at the tactical level (programme management) and at the individual project level (project management)
- the key factors which impact on the ability of a given organisation to drive value out of structured PMM
- effective approaches to the management of the project process in a specific organisational context

Skills outcomes
Subject specific skills:
- critically analyse project management tools, methodologies and approaches in the context of a given organisational setting and apply to real life projects


Syllabus

The module is delivered over three days:
Day One – choosing projects which align with organisational strategy and managing for project success. Portfolio and Programme Management.
Day Two – delivering projects which have been agreed effectively – approaches, tools and methodologies. Project Management and Risk management
Day Three - ensuring projects deliver benefit. Project success as against project management success.

The module aims to address 3 key issues:
- The manner in which organisations select projects and align these choices with overall strategy
- The delivery of projects and groups of project to enhance project and project management success
- The delivery of benefit to organisations from using structured approaches to project management, also known as ‘managing by projects’

Broadly this covers the areas of Portfolio Management, Programme Management and Project Management.
