GCSE Mathematics or equivalent. This module is not available to students who have a Maths A-level (or equivalent)

Module summary

A basic Pure Maths course for students who have not done A-level Mathematics.

Objectives

To teach basic mathematics up to A-level standard.

On completion of this module, students will be able to calculate the derivatives of elementary functions and apply this knowledge to problems.

Syllabus

- Laws of indices including exp(a+b), logarithms.
- Elementary trigonometry, sine and cosine rules.
- Inverse trigonometric functions.
- Geometry of lines and circles.
- Elementary differentiation, derivatives of powers, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions.
- Basic rules of differentiation; maxima and minima, curve sketching.
