This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

- Distance learning centred on web- Supplementary materials will be supplied using the WWW- Additional support mechanisms will include; Email support for more personalised assistance as well as telephone support. The monitoring of progress, outside summative assessment, will be undertaken using SAQs and online assessments, (Additional activities such as those related to the SAQs will require 30 hours of activity). 60 hours.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1) demonstrate an understanding of the basic biomechanics and engineering principles that underpins Medical Device Engineering
2) undertake simple analyses of biomechanical problems that involve medical implants
3) evaluate articles from the wider medical engineering literature and present the findings in an orderly manner
4) understand the main design and mechanical issues surrounding the use of orthopaedic implants.

Skills outcomes
- web-based interaction
- critical and literature review skills
- poster communication skills
- report and essay writing
- understanding of the necessary underpinning anatomical and biomechanical details that are important for the development and delivery of medical device instrumentation and interventions.

Syllabus

Introductory Engineering (including mechanics, materials science and tribology):
- Application of simple engineering principles to the biomechanics of the hip, knee ankle and shoulder
- The derivation of the forces in these joints using simplified models
- Mechanical and structural properties of biomaterials and biological materials
- Measurement of medical engineering data including those modalities in clinical use.

Introductory mechanics:
- Biomaterials and biological materials
- Biomechanics of the lower and upper limb
- Measurement and imaging of medical engineering modalitie.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

As with online modules progress is assessed through a number of mechanisms and on a continual basis.

- Firstly, access is monitored through web page logging. In each of the module units the students are requested to undertake a number of self-assessment exercises that are monitored through the web site.
- Email and telephone follow-up to queries.
- Further, the formal assignments are evenly distributed throughout the modules in a temporal manner.
