Module summary

Medical imaging plays a fundamental role in modern medicine. This module is the third of a series of three dedicated discovery modules on medical imaging (the others being MEDP1001 and MEDP2001), and focuses on medical imaging of the cardiovascular system. Building on a knowledge of the anatomy, function and disease of the cardiovascular system, the module explores the basic principles of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, interventional X-ray imaging, computed tomography angiography, and cardiac and vascular ultrasound, and shows how medical imaging is used in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Students may take this module without having taken the other medical imaging modules.

Objectives

To provide an appreciation and understanding of the basic principles underpinning the common medical imaging modalities and how they are used in the identification and monitoring and treatment of cardiovascular disease. To explain the fundamental anatomy, function and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Learning outcomes
On completing this module students should be able to:

- Recall the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, and the major diseases that affect it;
- Describe the basic principles underpinning MRI, Ultrasound, and X-ray imaging and how these imaging modalities produce diagnostic medical images;
- Understand how the major imaging modalities are used independently and collectively to identify cardiovascular disease;
- Understand how the different imaging modalities may be used to visualise cardiovascular anatomy and function, and be able to identify and describe suitable techniques for imaging key cardiovascular anatomy and disease.

Skills outcomes
An understanding of how medical images are formed when imaging the cardiovascular system, and how these images can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Syllabus

The anatomy and function of the human cardiovascular system;
Major diseases of the cardiovascular system;
Physics of the imaging modalities (X-ray/CT, MRI and Ultrasound);
Specific imaging techniques and protocols for cardiovascular imaging. Challenges when imaging the cardiovascular system;
Use of the imaging modalities in the clinical setting for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
