Pre-requisite qualifications

Normally, a degree in medicine, dentistry, nursing, health care, health management, a biological science, a social science or in a profession allied to medicine. Applications are encouraged from non-graduates with work experience in health research.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- structure the writing-up of a paper, poster or dissertation (or thesis);
- undertake word processing using Word;
- record and manage references using a bibliographic database;
- understand how journals, peer reviewers and academic examiners scrutinize and evaluate written research;
- apply for ethical approval and for financial support for a research project;
- understand how research related issues are disseminated, promoted and implemented in the health service;
- create effective tables, charts and figures using the computer.

Syllabus

The teaching style for this module will be active and participative. In seminars: a journal editor (or sub-editor) and a higher degree examiner will set out the processes of appraisal of submitted research work; NHS R&D staff will describe how research related issues are disseminated, promoted and implemented in the health service.

Students will work through specially written computer work-books in the University's computer clusters to learn how: to word-process using Microsoft Word; to use a graphics application to create effective tables, charts and figures; to record and manage references using a bibliographic database.
