Module summary
This module traces the musical on Broadway from the vaudeville acts and imports of the early twentieth century to present day pop and rock musicals. Proceeding chronologically, historical and social conditions will be examined to discover their influence on the development and growth of the genre. Case studies will include shows such as:- "Showboat"- "Carousel"- "Guys and Dolls"- "Evita"- "The Lion King" - "Mamma Mia!". Students will also be introduced to basic analytical techniques which will enable them to discuss the role of music in the musical, although no prior musical knowledge is required for this module.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- summarise the history and development of the musical on Broadway from the 1920s to the present
- explain how historical and social factors have influenced musical theatre on Broadway
- differentiate between Broadway musicals of different eras and styles
- undertake simple analyses of musicals
- discuss the role of music in the musical.
