Objectives

To introduce students to the basics of materials science and materials and process selection and their relevance to product design.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand the basic principles of materials science and technology, and appreciate their influence on product design;
- appreciate the typical properties and applications of the main classes of engineering materials;
- understand the importance of microstructure in the determination of material properties, and the influence which production process can exert on microstructure and hence properties;
- understand the place of materials selection in the design process;
- understand the relationship between material properties and process selection;
- construct flow sheets for the production of components from raw materials;
- understand the importance of correct process selection on the properties of components and the economics of their production;
- conduct a scientific diagnostic disassembly of a common artefact and determine the materials and processes used for the manufacture of its components and their assembly;
- understand the reasons for the choice of process route made for common components and artefacts.

- What are materials?
- How have engineering materials evolved and where will they go?
- Sources of materials.
- Structures of materials.
- Bulk properties of materials and their relationship to structure: mechanical, physical and chemical.
- Surface properties and surface engineering.
- Selection of materials.
- Production, characterisation and specification of raw materials.
- Secondary processing of metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials.
- Process selection: comparative properties and economics, process selection charts.
- Case studies in design: materials and process selection.

Private study

- 40 hours: Revision and assessment
- 40 hours: On-line case studies and self-learning packages (~2 hr/week)
- 35 hours: Revision for, and completion of, on-line formative tests (~1 hr/lecture)
- 15 hours: Completion of materials selection assignment
- 15 hours: Completion of process selection assignment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
