Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Individual students work under the guidance of a supervisor or supervisors. Progress is monitored at formal weekly meetings with the supervisor(s) as well as by regular informal meetings in the laboratory during the course of the work. The supervisor provides guidance on the preparation for an oral presentation and a viva voce and also on the form of the report. An assessor is appointed to monitor the progress of the work and offer advice if required.

Methods of assessment

An interim report is presented half way through the project which is discussed with the supervisor as to its style and content but not marked. At the same stage each student gives an brief presentation to the assessor who will give feedback. On completion of the project the student prepares a final report which is assessed by both supervisor and assessor and an oral presentation. The overall conduct of the project is assessed by the supervisor(s) and the final report by the supervisor and assessor. The assessor and one other staff member (not the supervisor) attend and mark the oral presentation given by the student to a group of peers. They also conduct a viva voce examination under conditions similar to those experienced by students for higher degrees (although not with an external examiner). The final mark is based on the:
Overall conduct of research: 40%;
Final report: 30%;
Viva voce: 15%;
Oral presentation: 15%.
