Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- plan a programme of research work together with the supervisor;
- operate effectively as a team when more than one person is working on the project;
- conduct a detailed literature search and prepare a structured reading list;
- appraise the importance and relevance of the information obtained;
- carry out a piece of theoretical, experimental, or observational research in astrophysics under supervision;
- present a written report in good scientific language;
- present an oral report on the project;
- describe, defend and criticise the project during a viva-voce.

Syllabus

Selection of project; literature search; laboratory work to carry out project; preparation of draft reports; oral presentation; preparation of final report.

Teaching methods

Formal meetings with supervisors 15 x 1 hour plus informal meetings as appropriate.

Private study

Self study/research: 265 hours;
Preparing for presentations: 20 hours;
Writing final project: 100 hours.
