Objectives

On completion of this module, students will have either:
PROJECT
- prepared for, planned and executed a theoretical project in a research field in Physics;
- carried out an appropriate literature survey effectively and efficiently;
- written a report in the style of a good research paper;
- presented the work verbally and effectively to a group of peers;
- defended the work in a viva voce examination under conditions similar to those experienced by candidates for a higher degree.

Or:
DISSERTATION
- planned and executed a detailed investigation of the status of a topic of current research in theoretical physics;
- written a report in the style of a good review article;
- presented the work verbally and effectively to a group of peers;
- defended the work in a viva voce examination under conditions similar to those experienced by candidates for a higher degree.

Syllabus

DISSERTATION:
- select a project from a list prepared by potential supervisors or, if desired, propose a project for approval by the module leader;
- undertake a literature search;
- conduct analytical and/or computational investigation as appropriate to the selected project;
- prepare a draft report and oral presentations;
- prepare the final report;
- defend the content of the final report at a viva voce examination.

PROJECT:
- select a topic from a list prepared by potential supervisors or, if desired, propose a topic for approval by the module leader;
- make effective use of the published and preprint literature to prepare a review of the current status of the selected topic which includes
- a technically detailed account of the theoretical background and methodology;
- a detailed summary of at least two key research papers, placing the problems addressed in the context of the research area as a whole, and giving a critical assessment of the results;
- prepare a draft report and oral presentations;
- prepare the final report;
- defend the content of the final report at a viva voce examination.

Teaching methods

Supervision meetings: 20 x 1 hours;


Group presentation: 4 x 2 hours.

Private study

Research: 300 hours;
Preparation of reports: 60 hours;
Preparation of oral presentation: 12 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Weekly supervisions; one interim report.

Methods of assessment

Conduct of research: 40%;
Oral presentation: 30%;
Final report: 30%.
