Objectives

To provide an overview of both the theoretical background and the applications of geoelectrical methods.

Learning outcomes
Students should be able to demonstrate understanding of the geoelectrical techniques in the course syllabus by:
- explaining the physical principles of the techniques;
- explaining the mechanisms by which electromagnetic properties of Earth materials arise;
- for a range of geoelectric techniques, identifying and explaining their: relative utilities; relative costs in time; basic field operation; abilities and limitations;
- quantitatively predicting the electromagnetic signal caused by some simple geometric bodies;
- elucidating examples of the use of geoelectrical methods for subsurface analysis; and
- independently combining lectures, assignments and the scientific literature to reach the above outcomes.

Syllabus

1. Electrical Properties of Earth Materials
2. Self Potential Methods
3. Resistivity Methods
4. Induced Polarization Methods
5. Ground Penetrating Radar
6. Electromagnetic Methods

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Coursework provides a mixture of summative (counting towards 20% of the final mark) and formative assessment.

Assessments consist of a mix of numerical questions and a discursive essay on topics that will be similar to those on the final exam.
