Objectives

1. To enhance student experience of interpreting field - based observations in the following braches of earth sciences: igneous petrology, sedimentary petrology, Quaternary geology.
2. To integrate information from all field trip activities to illuminate the geological development of Northern Ireland.
3. To introduce aspects of professional practice in environmental geology.

Skills outcomes
1. Refinement of observational skills and interpretation in all braches of petrology.
2. Collection of heavy mineral concentrates and analysis using portable XRF.


Syllabus

1. Hydrology, hydrogeology and landfoms of the Cuilcagh karst.
2. Quaternary geology of the southern Sperrin Mountains.
3. Quaternary record of the deglaciation of the Irish Sea.
4. Collection of stream sediments and interpretation of the data.
5. Sedimentary sequences in Tertiary and Jurassic sediments and associated intrusions.
6. Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and volcanism.

Preparation for field course:

Background reading and preparation: 12 hours.

Production of written assessments:

1. Log to be constructed and annotated during the field course (5 hours).
2. Report (2,500 words) to be researched and written post field course. (30 hours).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Observation during the 6 field days- responses to oral questions in the field and performance in the two short assessments.
