Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have developed:
- an understanding of and appreciation for a variety of approaches to research and for a variety of tools and methods;
- the ability to critique or defend research approaches, results, and implications;
- the awareness of the broader institutional and financial environment within which academic research is undertaken;
- the ability to design and conduct research using appropriate tools and procedures for data collection and analysis;
- practical experience in developing a successful project;
- the ability to timetable and develop a research proposal;
- the competency to successfully communicate research goals, proposals, findings, and recommendations.

There is no formal assessment for this module.

Syllabus

- Philosophy and Social Sciences
- Research methodologies, concepts and theories: constructing a frame for analysis
- Creating research questions; narrowing down the alternatives
- Defining a research proposal, timetable, and milestones
- Relevant literature and data sources for research
- Project development and writing interdisciplinary papers and grant proposals
- Working in groups: organization, database, sharing of information, problems
- Paradigms
- Research Ethics
- Radical approaches, action research and fieldwork
- Presenting and discussing research findings (submission of abstracts, creation of a research poster, conference presentations).
