Pre-requisite qualifications
Successful completion of year 3This fieldtrip will incur a cost if it is an optional module on your programme of study.
This module is mutually exclusive with
SOEE3040 | Easter Field Class (Geo) |
SOEE3042 | Easter Field Class (Env) |
SOEE5605M | Easter Field Class (Geo Sci) |
This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
Undertake nine days of geological fieldwork on the island of Cyprus to investigate the dynamics of formation, cooling, alteration of mid-oceanic ridges, their subsequent emplacement as ophiolites, and their unroofing and post-emplacement history, and to evaluate the evolution of sedimentary environments from deep marine to shallow marine to continental, during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of this part of the eastern Mediterranean. To investigate environmental geological issues such as earthquake and landslide hazards, mining and its impacts, availability of surface and groundwater resources and the impact of geological conditions on engineered structures such as dams.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will:
1) Have knowledge of how pure and applied geological concepts may be used in field situations.
2) Have developed further the skills of integration, field observations and synthesis of geological models and environmental data.
3) Have demonstrated independent learning and to critically and creatively evaluate current issues by reading the relevant scientific literature prior to the fieldtrip and evaluating and criticising received opinion.
Syllabus
Geological observations/syntheses in the field. Preparatory lecture(s) and self study of background materials.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Staff will monitor students in the field to ensure that they are making sufficient progress with recording data and synthesizing previous observations. The students will also receive feedback on their first field-based spot talk and their group presentations to enable to give a better second spot talks (if and necessary) and subsequent written exam at the end of the semester. Methods of assessment
