Objectives

This module covers the School's 'International' and 'Europe' study year abroad programmes for the MGeol, MGeoPhys and BAMEnv and BScMEnv programmes.

Objectives are to:
- expose students to a different culture and style of teaching, including, where appropriate, learning a foreign language
- provide opportunities for independent study with world-class research staff at our partner institutions
- provide access to courses, subjects and fieldwork opportunities outside the scope of the equivalent BSc/BA programmes.
- prepare students to return to Leeds and take masters-level courses by enhancing the depth of knowledge in their subject
- prepare students for the world of work by providing opportunities for personal development and travel.

Syllabus

During their time at an overseas University, students are required to take a similar number of credits as would be taken by the average student at the University in each academic year, approximately 80% of which should be at a level appropriate to a student entering level 3 at Leeds University. The number of credits required to be taken at various levels is defined in a Learning Contract specific for each partner institution, and the final programme and any changes are subject to approval by nominated staff at Leeds.

The number and level of credits required to pass the year is also defined in the Learning Contract, which may in some cases define a pass-fail level in individual modules. A somewhat lower credit load (following Study Abroad Office guidelines) may be allowed at foreign language institutions where the student is taking non-credited language classes.

Approximately 20% of modules taken can be general electives or lower level courses; these will not normally be included in mark translation.

Marks at the overseas institution will be translated into a single Leeds mark according to a formula specific to each partner institution, and defined in the Learning Contract. If the student fails the year abroad by failing to gain the required number of credits they will be transferred onto the equivalent BSc/BA programme and will take a 'normal' 3rd year at Leeds.

Pastoral Care:
Pastoral care during the year abroad is undertaken in partnership with the Leeds Study Abroad Office. Students are provided with individual log books and Learning Contracts to record their module choices and learning experiences. Contact between the student and SEE is maintained by e-mail and involves the Study Abroad Manager (academic), nominated administrative staff, and the Personal Tutor
