Pre-requisite qualifications
Normally a minimum of GCSE sciences and mathematics at grade A/B. At least one Science A level or equivalent experience.This module is not approved as a discovery module
Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to: demonstrate their competence at mathematical key skills considered essential pre-requisites for the successful completion of the BSc Sports Science and Exercise Science and BSc Sports Science and Physiology undergraduate degree programmes; have confidence in approaching new problems which involve mathematics.Syllabus
1. Addition and multiplication: significant figures and decimal places;
2. Decimals, fractions and percentages;
3. Fundamentals of algebra: re-arranging equations; solving linear equations;
4. Quadratic equations;
5. Dynamics (changes with time): displacement, velocity and acceleration;
6. Calculating/modelling motion; interpreting graphs of motion; central differences method;
7. Vectors and scalars; components of a vector (using trigonometry);
8. Energy and work;
9. Bearings and vector relationships;
10.Projectiles;
11.Degrees and radians;
12.Indices and logarithms;
13.Concepts of data handling.
