Module summary

This module allows a student to select and undertake a research project in health informatics.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- assess the feasibility of potential topics for health informatics research
- carry out a systematic and critical review of the relevant literature
- select and apply the appropriate research methods for their agreed research question
- demonstrate independent application of the knowledge, skills and techniques that he or she has acquired during the MSc programme in carrying out and reporting on a research project
- demonstrate skills in project management and research presentation
- present a coherent and high quality report of the research project

- Take a pro-active and self-reflective role in understanding the health domain, including being able to critically and creatively identify and evaluate potential solutions against political, economic, social and technological constraints.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the steps required to undertake research;
- Appreciate alternative methodologies employed to answer different types of research questions;
- Critique their own research and that of others.
Skills outcomes
- Independent application of health informatics knowledge and research methods, project management and report writing.
- Skills necessary to undertake research at a higher level, in preparation for a future career as either contributing to research or as an advocate of research/evidence based work
- Independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
- Skills in the dissemination of research

Syllabus

The syllabus is essentially the stages of a research project:
- Introduction to research projects
- Defining a research question
- Developing a research protocol
- Designing a search strategy
- Undertaking a systematic literature review
- Undertaking any additional data collection (where appropriate)
- Data Analysis
- Report preparation
This module is primarily based on self study but students will have a first (and possibly second) supervisor who will agree the project with the student and guide and monitor progress through regular meetings.

Group seminars will be delivered at key stages during the module

Private study

Students will spend their private study time:
- identifying, refining and agreeing a research question and study protocol
- planning and designing their project
- implementing the project
- writing up the report
- Critically reflecting on the limitations of their study and identifying where there is a need for future research

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Seminar discussions and one-to-one discussions with the supervisor(s).
A draft protocol will be reviewed and feedback provided to students.
Email will be used to provide feedback and support to students.
