Module summary

Turkish is one of the major languages of the contemporary Middle East. This module assumes no prior knowledge of Turkish. It offers students an opportunity to develop their skills in four areas of language acquisition: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. The module is designed as an discovery module for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Objectives

This module is designed for those who wish to attain a basic understanding of Turkish language covering four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The module aims to equip students with a basic grounding in Turkish grammar, reading and writing. Basic grammatical structures will be covered and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication.

Additionally, the module will introduce students to Turkish morphology and syntax. The main focus will be on reading and writing. It aims to equip students with alphabets, morphology and syntax, and basic sentence construction in Turkish, and acquire some vocabulary which will help them to conduct basic conversations.

Learning outcomes
On the completion of this module students should have acquired a basic knowledge of Turkish grammar and a range of vocabulary in Turkish sufficiently wide to allow them, with the occasional aid of the dictionary, to read basic texts and hold conversations on everyday matters in Turkish.

Skills outcomes
On the completion of this module students will be able to understand Turkish alphabet and basic sentences constrictions in Turkish, the basics of Turkish grammar and acquire vocabulary to be able, with the aid of a dictionary, to read very basic modern texts and conduct basic everyday conversation.


Syllabus

This module will introduce basic grammar fields and more syntactic constructions, as well as continuing to expand students' vocabulary in a variety of lexical fields. A wide range of grammatical topics will be covered, as well as wide range of basic texts for reading.

Students will also be introduced to writing basic Turkish sentences and paragraphs.

Topics covered at this level include communication in everyday situation. This module will introduce basic grammar fields and more syntactic constructions, as well as continuing to expand students' vocabulary in a variety of lexical fields.
