Module summary

This is a shared module for both the Cardiology and Audiology routes of the BSc Healthcare Science programme. This module will provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of a range of common measurement and instrumentation techniques as well as providing specific discipline related knowledge that underpin Audiology and Cardiology investigations.

Objectives

To understand and discuss the underpinning principles and properties of the measurement techniques that are fundamental to Healthcare Science investigations.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Explain the basic equipment/techniques used and their operation within the relevant Healthcare Science Division.
2. Describe and explain the role of each modality in the patient pathway including the main clinical applications.
3. Discuss the underpinning principles of electronics, electrophysiological and psychophysical measurement and instrumentation as applicable to each specialism.
4. Explain the possible health effects of equipment and techniques used in each specialism including the legislative framework .
5. Describe and explain the quality assurance framework for equipment and techniques in each specialism.
6. Investigate principles and applications of biomedical imaging techniques
7. Demonstrate safe and precise technical skills using correct terminology whilst ensuring analytical and problem solving skills are developed.

Computer acquisition, storage and analysis of physiological signals.

Principles of calibration and maintenance of test equipment following national and international standards

BASIC PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY

Biological generation of electrical fields
Signal detection theory
Electrodes
Recording techniques

IMAGING

Techniques : ultrasound, general radiography, CT, MRI, isotopes, laser, biological hazards
Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Sleep Sciences content
Fluid dynamics: Poiseuilles law, laminar and turbulent blood flow
Measurement techniques underpinning the measure of:
Volume and flow measuring devices used to measure dynamic and static lung volumes.
Respiratory gas analysis

Airflow, respiratory effort, body position, sound during sleep

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The rationale for the online MCQ’s and short answer questions is two fold: 1) to reinforce the retention of core information provided in the lectures and 2) to provide a formative element for the module manager to monitor students understanding of these key principles. The previous weeks questions will be discussed and answers provided with complimentary student interaction at the beginning of each lecture.
The online workbook will be accessed through the VLE allowing the lecturers access to monitor progress. This will be consolidated in the formal class setting using the tasks set as a means of online group learning with the added benefit of improving knowledge retention.
