Module summary

The overall aim of this module is to give the student experience of Audiology practice that ensures that the student can undertake a range of routine practice expected of a newly qualified Healthcare Science Practitioner (Audiology).Students are prepared for practice through seminars and practical sessions delivered in Semester 1 and 2 in the university and in work placement in Semesters 1, 2a and 2b.

Objectives

The overall objectives of the module are to enable the student to achieve:

An understanding of the theory and range of routine work undertaken within the field of Audiology

Routine skills and attitudes relevant to the Healthcare Science (Audiology) Practitioner.

This module will build on the foundation provided with Year 1 regarding Healthcare Science by focusing on the Audiology aspect of the neurosensory theme. The student will develop their audiological knowledge, skills and experience.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be able to:

1. Apply the knowledge and the clinical and professional skills developed in this and adjacent academic modules in a clinical context for a range of service delivery approaches.
2. Communicate effectively with patients, audiological colleagues and other professionals using a range of methods appropriate to the healthcare setting.
3. Assess the hearing status via patient enquiry and application of routine diagnostic testing and appropriately record the outcome.
4. Devise action plans for routine hearing amplification rehabilitation.
5. Demonstrate the standards of professional behaviour as defined by regulatory and professional bodies
6. Discuss regulations regarding safeguarding
7. Explain local guidelines for responding to unacceptable behaviour by patients, carers, relatives, peers and colleagues including harassment, bullying and violent behaviour

Portfolio Set - Semester 2b Week 1 Due - Semester 2b Week 15 - Pass/fail Practice Assessment: Pass/Fail Portfolio based Assessment will be through the achievement of defined performance criteria using a structured portfolio of evidence. This is a mix of short written observation evidence by the student, together with a summative report by the clinical educator. The prescribed MSC PTP Training Manual will be used to determine the requisite PTP level 2 competencies (itemised in Subject specific skills). PSRB approval will be required for assessment changes in 20/21
