Module summary

This practice based module will continue the development and achievement of the theoretical and practical skills required to practice as an audiologist.

Objectives

The overall aim of this module is to ensure the student is able to undertake a range of routine practice expected of a newly qualified Healthcare Science Practitioner (Audiology).

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module the student will:

1. Demonstrate competency in routine Audiological clinical procedures

2. Apply audiological knowledge and skills to critically evaluate
hearing assessment results and to effectively create a treatment plan for hearing rehabilitation for a range of service delivery approaches.

3. Demonstrate and evaluate safe and effective work practices in audiology clinical environments according to local and national guidance.

4. Produce a Professional portfolio of evidence which cumulatively records the professional skills, knowledge and attitudes required for professional registration.

5. Communicate effectively with patients, audiological colleagues and other professionals using a range of methods appropriate to the healthcare setting.

6. Demonstrate the standards of professional behaviour as defined by regulatory and professional bodies

7. Evaluate the need in Healthcare Science for innovation, quality improvement, change and public engagement

8. Critically evaluate the regulations and processes to ensure patient safety, confidentiality, data security and critical incident reporting within the NHS and its legal framework

9. Evaluate the need as a health professional for independent learning, shared leadership, multi-disciplinary working, Continuing Professional Development and public engagement

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During clinical practice, student progress will be monitored by a combination of the existing clinical educator network currently used for the BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Audiology) course, the monitoring of clinical Training Manual, PDP reflective reports with feedback from University clinical lecturer. ALPS exercises (with feedback from University clinical lecturer), clinical liaison tutor visit at the student placement centre, clinical educator monthly report to the clinical liaison tutors and the attendance at 1 reflective seminar day sessions at the University.

Students will also be required to submit for feedback,2 reflective written assignments which will form part of their 4500 written assessment. This will allow for monitoring of student progress towards their written assessment.

The assessment tariff for this module has been designed to conform to the School Assessment Credit Weighting system. Therefore as this module is a 50:50 theory/practice module, the theoretical assessment conforms to the 15 credit weighting scale and the practice assessment document (portfolio) will be marked as a PASS/FAIL. There will be 1 resit opportunity for the essay and PDP. Practice Assessment: Pass/Fail Portfolio based Assessment will be through the achievement of defined performance criteria using a structured portfolio of evidence. This is a mix of short written observation evidence by the student, together with a summative report by the clinical educator. The prescribed MSC PTP Training Manual will be used to determine the requisite PTP level 3 competencies (itemised in Subject specific skills). There will be 1 resit opportunity for the essay and for the Portfolio.
