Objectives

The aim of this module is to prepare the student for their first graduate post and to make them aware of professional issues and professional development. It will allow them to analyse their role as a healthcare professional within the wider healthcare team, taking into account their roles and responsibilities along with the associated ethical and legal considerations.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

1. Analyse their roles and responsibilities as a graduate healthcare professional;
2. Be cognisant of the role of relevant recognised professional, ethical and legal frameworks that guide their professional practice;
3. Reflect on their student experience and the transition to graduate practitioner;
4. Critically evaluate the changing face of healthcare;
5. Evaluate their role in the multidisciplinary healthcare team;
6. Prepare for applications for their graduate posts;

Professional, ethical and legal frameworks that guide healthcare and practice:
- Guidelines & schemes of work
- Scope of practice and career development;
- Contemporary policies and drivers in healthcare;

- Regulatory and professional bodies

Management of Healthcare:
- Awareness and understanding of key issues – eg, reconfiguration of services/staffing/finances;
- Local & wider issues; PESTLE approach

Multidisciplinary and inter-professional working:
- Individual role in the team
- Boundaries of individual roles
- Learning from each other and seeking advice
- Holistic approach to practice/patient management pathway
- Patient centred care /patient perspective

The 73 hours private study that has been allocated for this module for activities such as:

- Wider reading/ writing up notes;
- Planning and preparation for student group seminars;
- Preparation for workshops and study days;
- Academic supervision;
- Research material for the summative essay component of the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are tasked with collectively compiling the reading list for the module, giving consideration to current literature, relevant policies and legislation, professional and registration bodes and their associated standards.

They will then use this as a resource to undertake enquiry-based learning to evaluate how this will contribute to or impact on their professional practice and present a 10-minute report. For example, 'Evaluate the roles of professional and regulatory bodies for you as a healthcare professional'.

Group presentation. Each group is allocated a title to explore its contribution, relevance or impact on their professional practice and present a 5-minute presentation. For example, ‘Evaluate the roles of professional and regulatory bodies for you as a healthcare professional’. They must give consideration to current literature, relevant policies and legislation, professional and registration bodies and their associated standards. Feedback & class discussion further enhances knowledge, understanding & application.
