Module summary

This module covers professional practice in relation to working in the UK art and cultural sector. Through a range of workshops, we will explore key issues such as inclusion, accessibility and precarious working conditions in the arts. We will learn practical skills in presenting our practice in person, online and in artist statements and celebrate different models of professional practice including co-operative, artist-led and social engaged practices. We will also overview ways of fundraising and take a mock trial run applying for grants. These activities will help us to ground our practices and decision making as professionals.

Objectives

To familiarise level 3 students with critically aware methods for developing an arts related career.
To guide students through approaches to developing an independent practice within their chosen field.
To introduce students to artist initiatives, galleries and curators through guest speakers.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate evidence of the following:
- Time management skills
- Effective and appropriate communication skills
- Writing of statements, proposals and applications related to arts field
- A familiarity with both local and national art scene, galleries, artist initiatives.
- Analytical skills in relation to presentation and display
- An understanding of different audiences for exhibitions, art writing etc.

Syllabus

Students take part in workshops that prepare them to critically navigate the UK arts and cultural sector as a professional after graduation.

The workshop will introduce students to a range of artistic and curatorial practices, to different institutional models and modes of organising and explore practical aspects related to working independently. These sessions will familiarise students with professional career pathways open to them after graduation.

The students will work towards grounding students’ practices in an understanding of the sector. It will be a holistic learning experience that supports students to consider the way they will participate in the sector after their studies are completed.

Private study

Students will work independently to develop their understanding of and engagement with professional practices. They will research, develop and author a mock arts funding proposal, following a similar procedure to those established by UK arts organisations and funding bodies. Students will also produce a responsive artwork to synthesise their learning on the module and will be expected to presented this to their peers. Independent reading based on the sessions will be supplied.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress is monitored continuously through regular interaction in seminars. Students will be assessed at key points in the module. Written feedback will be returned to students.
