Objectives

This module is a combination of theoretical syllabus in drilling and production technology and subjected related laboratory assignments.

Theoretical:
On completion of the theoretical section of the module, students should have a detailed knowledge of the theory, applications and techniques of petroleum drilling and production including surface processing, refining theory, refinery operational practice and product specifications as well as health and safety.

Practical:
On completion of the practical section of the module students should:
- have developed experimental design, problem solving and data analysis skills;
- understand how to apply theory in lectures to the interpretation and critical analysis of experimental results;
- have obtained experience of working with equipment and diagnostic tools;
- have developed skills in data gathering and recording, report writing and team working;
- have developed a critical awareness regarding the quality of data generated;
- have learnt how to identify and quantify sources of experimental error.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the of the module, owing to extra practical sessions and coursework and more extensive theoretical assignments, students will have a deeper knowledge of the theory, techniques and equipment used in petroleum drilling and refining to marketable products as well as the health and safety aspects. Students should also have advanced practical skills, including data gathering and in depth analysis and interpretation, report writing, team working, problem solving, identifying and quantifying sources of experimental error.

Theoretical:
Drilling Technology
- Conventional drilling techniques and equipment
- Drilling mud and properties
- Formation pore pressures
- Casing and cementing
- Well control and health and safety
- Directional drilling
- Well completion

Production Technology:
- Fluid flow and reservoir dynamics
- Primary and secondary recovery methods
- Well problem and product enhancement
- Surface processing
- Properties of oil and natural gas
- Development of oil and gas processing techniques
- Nanotechnology in oil and gas

Practical:
Students work in groups and undertake a series of subject-related experiments. Experiments cover areas related to petroleum engineering, this includes working with a drilling simulator.
Each student submits an individual report for each experiment, in which the data gathered is critically analysed in the light of relevant literature/theory and conclusions are drawn.
