Pre-requisite qualifications

Successful completion of the first two years of an MBChB programme at UK Universities or international equivalent. For international students proof of English Language proficiency will be required. In line with undergraduate medicine we require a minimum of English GCSE grade B or IELTS 7.5 (including a 7.5 in spoken English), or equivalent.

Objectives

To enhance skills in explaining scientific methodology and evaluating conclusions, especially as they relate to cardiovascular science and medicine. To improve communication skills by the preparation of written summaries and commentaries of existing scientific papers, and by participation in group discussion of papers that illustrate emerging themes in cardiovascular research.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
Evaluate published articles with respect to study design, analytical methods and interpretation of research findings
Prepare an abstract summarizing the contents of a scientific paper.
Write a concise commentary article on a published paper in a format suitable for a journal.

Skills outcomes
The ability to identify and synthesise key information from published work and prepare and original abstract.
The ability to appreciate the key strengths of published work in the context of the wider research field and to communicate this through the producation of a paper commentary.

Syllabus

Students will attend tutorials exploring the format and value of previously published commentary papers. In addition they will attend tutorials that present, and encourage discussion of, specific papers of international influence in medical science and clinical science. One of these papers will be reviewed in detail and set as a formative commentary exercise. Students will attend a seminar on the preparation of abstracts for scientific and clinical papers. Students will also attend a seminar on journal editing and the publication process. This seminar is held jointly with students of the iBSc in Clinical Sciences (Molecular Medicine), (PATH3140)

Private study

Papers for group discussion will be circulated for reading and evaluation in advance of each tutorial In addition, students will identify by private study, a paper of influence and merit on a cardiovascular topic that particularly interests them, and produce a commentary article on that paper. It is expected that the selected paper will have been published in the preceding 3 years.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Individual written feedback will be given in response to formative exercises in abstract preparation.
Individual feedback will be given to the formative exercise in Commentary writing, and in addition a group feedback tutorial will be held during which group discussion of good and inappropriate features of the formative commentaries will be encouraged. The module leader will ensure that all students have selected a paper for summative assessment in good time, and will provide individual support to any students who are finding difficulties in making a suitable selection.
