Year running 2020/21

Pre-requisite qualifications

Students must have satisfied progression requirements from level 2 to level 3 of an MEng undegraduate degree programme in the School of Civil Engineering.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module students will have completed the required modules in a recognised institution overseas, as approved by STSEC, including experiencing education in an international environment. This will equip students with the knowledge required to appreciate the international aspects of civil engineering.

The year abroad is a progression requirement to fourth year of all MEng programmes at Leeds.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module, students should:
- have demonstrated their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and to adapt to a new culture and learning paradigm;
- have broadened their understanding and knowledge of their subject specialism(s);
- have gained a deeper understanding of the culture, institutions and working practices of the country in which they studied;
- have, where appropriate, improved their foreign language skills;
- have developed transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.

Skills outcomes
The essential individual nature of the Year Abroad modules/classes/units means that each student may have different learning experiences.

Students on this module may benefit from gaining any or all of the following:

1. The dynamic nature of civil engineering thought and practice.
2. The diversity of the global civil engineering environments.
3. Cognitive skills
4. Practical/professional skills
5. Undertake effective laboratory and field work (with due regard for safety and risk assessment)
6. Learn in familiar and unfamiliar situations
7. Communicate effectively (in writing, verbally and through graphical presentations), this may be in a foreign language
8. Apply numerical and computational skills to civil engineering problems
9. Use information technology effectively
10. Work as part of a team and to recognise and respect the viewpoints of others
11. Manage time and organise work effectively.

Syllabus

The students will study modules/classes/units at an overseas university equivalent to level 3 modules taught at Leeds, as approved by STSEC following discussion with programme leaders.

The study will involve an equivalent of 120 credits, specified as the Year Abroad Load (YAL), of taught courses in the subject area of their programme but which neither duplicates material already studied in Leeds nor which will be duplicated by modules to be taken on their return. It is likely that they will supplement this with academic modules which broadens the focus of their degree programme and/or modules related to the history, culture, language or literature of the host country.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- In accordance with the requirements of specific modules at the host institution. Progress will be monitored by the host institution academics and Leeds Civil programme leaders concerned.

Assessment will be undertaken in 2 stages:

STAGE 1 - ASSESSMENT AT HOST INSTITUTION:

Every host institution has a Year Abroad Load (YAL) - defined by the School and equivalent to 120 credits at the University of Leeds - see E-handbook for details.
Each student will be expected to take modules/classes/units - approved by the respective Programme Leader - totalling to the YAL of the respective overseas destination.
Students will be assessed by the host institution in all the modules/classes/units.

STAGE 2 - ASSESSMENT AT LEEDS

Each student will be expected to make arrangements for an official transcript to be sent to the School. The deadline for receipt of the official transcript will be 31st August.

Each official transcript will be examined and assessed on a pass/fail basis.

A student will achieve a "pass" if they have:
- undertaken approved modules/classes/units totalling to the YAL;
- passed (by the host institution's standards) at least five sixths of the YAL; and
- an overall performance equal to or better than:
- grade C for all host institutions in USA;
- weighted average of 50% for all host institutions in Australia;
- grade C for University of Calgary, McMaster University and McGill University;
- weighted average of 60% for the University of Waterloo;
- grade C for the National University of Singapore;
- grade C for Hong Kong Polytechnic University;
- grade E for Institut National des Sciences Appliquees de Lyon;
- grade E for Hochschule fur Technik, Stuttgart; and
- grade E for Universidad de Cantabria.

Otherwise, the student will achieve a "fail".

PROGRESSION AND RE-SIT

No re-sits are possible for individual modules/classes/units unless undertaken at the host institution. Some host institutions do not offer re-sits.

A student's progression route will depend on when the School receives their official transcript. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the School receives their official transcript by the deadline.

The information below summarises possible progression routes.

PASS (transcript received by 31 August) - Progress to the final year of the appropriate MEng/BEng (International) programme immediately.

PASS (transcript received after 31 August) - May progress to the final year of the appropriate MEng/BEng (International) programme a year or more later.

FAIL - Transfer to MEng/BEng and do Level 3 at Leeds as a first attempt.
