Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:1. be able to plan and organise project work logically
2. be able to use visual research techniques to develop ideas
3. be able to use their own visual language to communicate intentions
4. have gained an understanding of the properties of media when selelcting design processes
5. have gained an understanding of the design process in relation to fashion, graphics and textiles
6. have gained an understanding of how to analyse and evaluate their own work
7. proceed to level one of undergraduate programme in design.
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the design process in relation to fashion, textiles and graphics
- Demonstrate the ability to utilise media in a manner appropriate to fashion, textiles and graphics
- Demonstrate the ability to develop a personal visual language
- Understand how to analyse and contextualise practical work through historic and contemporary visual research
Syllabus
The module will cover the following topics:
The fundamental principles of visual research and drawing, media and techniques will be considered in the context of three design projects from the areas of:
1. Graphic Design
2. Textile/Fashion Design.
Students will be encouraged to consult with tutors about general art and design issues in relation to their own practice.
The module will build upon knowledge gained in DESN 0010 / 0020 to enable students to, conduct research and to work with a range of media with the aim of developing design ideas in an imaginative and creative way. The module is designed to develop individual awareness of contemporary, historic and related contexts. Throughout the module students will begin to consider their chosen area of design interest.
The module will give students the opportunity to move towards more self directed learning. At the end of the module students will consult with tutors and choose one area of specialisation to study in greater depth at undergraduate level.
The module is made up of two studio-based projects each one contributing equal marks within the module

- Editing and presentation: 41 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Critiques given at appropriate stages of the module during semester two (a minimum of two per project)- Submission of projects in weeks three, six, and eleven
- Regular contact with relevant staff members.
