Objectives
The module content is designed to introduce students to Western art and design history. Students will be required to write a 2500 word written visual analysis assignments to take the form of either an exhibition review, or a commentary for a survey exhibition of artworks or displays of designed objects. Students will learn to correctly use and reference written sources relating to contemporary and historic art and design movements. Students will learn how to link the historic and contemporary artist and designer research to the development of their own practical work.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. organise and interpret art and design research material
2. interpret visual and written source material
3. form logical arguments and make comparative assessments, in the sphere of the visual arts and design
4. identify materials and media used in the visual arts and design
5. appreciate relevant contextual issues in art and design practice
6. make a formal presentation
Syllabus
This module will allow students to research, understand and comment on some aspect of art and design practice in order to appreciate the link between their own work and that of historic and contemporary artists and designers. They will consider the methods by which art and design historians/practitioners interpret meaning and artistic intention in relation to significant art and design movements.
Students will be expected to use this module to contextualise their own practice and gain confidence with art and design terminology. Students will be required to submit a written/illustrated journal and present the findings of their personal study in the form of a peer-group presentation.
The module will consider different ways of looking at art and design in relation to:
1. methods of art and design production
2. contextual issues
3. stylistic forms.
Students will be required to produce a personal study in the form of a written and illustrated journal and formal presentation.
