Module summary

This module explores the changing dynamics within the fashion industry due to the pressure for greater sustainability. The module will consider the broad nature of sustainability and the fashion industry to show the challenges faced by Fashion as well as highlight how the industry has reacted to these challenges. The module will explore how graduates can influence consumers, organisations and society’s view of sustainability through their individual and professional decisions.

Objectives

The aim of the module is to introduce the concept of sustainability with a focus on the challenges and opportunities for the global fashion industry. This is achieved by exploring the changing landscape of the sustainability agenda over recent years, by understanding the role and the impact of brands, suppliers, government, consumers and individuals who work in the industry. Knowledge is developed by considering the dialogue from stakeholder to the industry and studying the current theories and practices for sustainable fashion. The course will also explore how students in their graduate roles can play a part in influencing consumers, industry and society for a sustainable future.

Learning outcomes
Students who have successfully completed the module will be able to demonstrate the following:
1. Understand some of the broad definitions of sustainability in a context of the fashion industry, society and the consumer
2. An understanding of the key drivers for sustainability now and for the future and the impacts those drivers can have on the industry,
3. Identify the links between business decision making and potential impacts on sustainability,
4. An ability to assess and critique sustainability approaches used within different organisations, industries and communication channels;
5. Display an understanding of the interactions between business, the consumer and society on sustainability strategies


Syllabus

The module will explore the macro pressures that are driving the need for improved sustainability for the fashion industry. The definitions of sustainability will be explored and the impact of and the responsibility of the fashion industry on sustainability in the 21st century will be considered. The module will consider how the different concepts of sustainability have and will change how the industry will be viewed, how it operates and the how roles within the industry will need to evolve. The role and influence of the consumer will be consider and the growing importance of transparency will be discussed. The module will consider how new technology and new business models can support a more sustainable approach.

Private study

Each lecture is regarded as a signpost for further reading and enquiry, requiring an average of 5h of independent study per topic.
The undertaking of the project component of this module will require significant research time:

Additional time for revision for the examination is also required (24h).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A mid-project verbal presentation offers opportunity for formative feedback. This is supported by opportunities for informal feedback during seminar sessions.
