Module summary

The module provides opportunities for students to consider how meaning might be produced through creative practice, its display and context. Students are encouraged to find and develop the content and form of their practice in relation to the discourse that surrounds contemporary cultural issues and art & design practices.

Objectives

This module is concerned with the making and evaluation of self-directed studio practice in relation to ideas of ‘Art in context’. It is designed to provide skills and resourcefulness as a stage towards students confidently taking full charge of their practical studio research and engagement with materials and processes.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1 demonstrate a familiarity with processes, materials and concepts which relate to a developing studio practice 2. develop skills and techniques within areas of studio practice appropriate to their concerns and interests 3. undertake appropriate contextual research related to their studio practice
4. present creative practical outcomes and research findings in a coherent and accessible form which demonstrates critical ability and gives context to practice.

Skills outcomes
Creative practice skills including 3D construction, sound, photography, painting, drawing, moving image and printmaking. The practice is informed by theory and academic research.


Syllabus

This module will build on student learning developed through their studio experience in Semester 1. Experience will be gained in a range of art practices to evolve their interest in contexts, materials and techniques with an emphasis on developing skill. Students will consider fitness to purpose in the application of two and three-dimensional materials and processes in making art from a range of art technologies including painting, 3D construction, printmaking and lens-based art and design Situations in which art and design may be experienced and created will be explored in relation to notions of art in context. The relationship between ideas and material outcomes will be considered as students engage with the work of other practitioners and identify contexts for their personal work.

- Reading for lectures, tutorials, seminars and reference and analysis file (23 hours) - Preparation of reference and analysis file (36 hours) - Preparation of portfolio (175hours).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Students’ creative practice work will be seen by their studio tutor every week during the practical sessions and students have the opportunity for tutorial guidance.
- Students will have a mid-semester monitoring tutorial with written feedback on practice and a research and analysis file in progress.
- Peer – critique: there is a formal opportunity to view and comment on others’ work x 1.
