Module summary

This module introduces students to men`s and womenswear fashion design. Students are encouraged to conduct independent lines of enquiry across a broad international fashion market place in an order that students begin to formulate appropriate and diverse contemporary fashion design solutions. . With an emphasis on challenging traditional methods of fashion research, vigorous design development and presentation skills are taught. Laying a solid foundation of 2D portfolio development for contemporary 21s century fashion design.

Objectives

The module is an introduction to students to the practices, processes, strategies employed in communication fashion design concepts. Students will begin to conduct independent lines of fashion research and inquiry in order to formulate creative and diverse solutions in designing contemporary men’s and womenswear fashion design.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate fashion research and analysis through fashion concepts and gather information that possesses the information for further fashion creative development;
2. Demonstrate and develop visual contemporary fashion ideas through a wide range of media;
3. Communicate and explain the rationale of ideas relative to designing contemporary fashion effectively in verbal, visual or written forms and articulate these ideas in group discussions:
4. Acquire a critical perception of fashion within a social , cultural and global context
5. Demonstrate self-motivation, commitment, time management and self-discipline.

Syllabus

The module commences with a range of research and design related activities. Through a range of teaching methods students develop and produce a range of drawing styles utilising various media, and examine the practice, process and strategies employed in communicating design concepts.
Students develop contemporary fashion design through researching social, global and cultural topics for a cross section of market levels. Students research sources of reference used in design, research, and examine forms of fashion predictions available to practising designers.

Creative design development will include the production of fashion research and design journals, visual notebooks, sketchbooks, concept boards and fully realised fashion design work that will be enhanced by the use of CAD and software presentation skills. Students will be expected to participate effectively in group/individual critiques and will become aware of the importance of self-motivation, commitment and time management. The scope and format of suitable assesses outcomes-journals, notebooks, sketchbooks and concept boards- will be introduced and discussed at appropriate points in the module.
