Module summary

This module advances textile design to textile product problem-solving skills. Applying breadth of fibre-yarn-materials awareness in textile experimentations using a variety of textile technologies and processes employed in the construction, colouration, and application of surface pattern and structural form (2D-3D). Visual and market research analysis will inform the contextualisation of material experimentations and identification of commercial textile product and market. Refining experimentations supporting process and/or technology decision making of in the final production process stages, concludes in the breadth of textile process-production specialisms presented within an industry skills based textile portfolio. Scale, variation of scale, repeat, and repetition, in relation to textile surface pattern and textile 2D/3D structure will underpin experimentations with materials and processes into the production of technically resolved textiles relevant to chosen product and market. The final textile design – textile product range within the portfolio will be a resource for further potential product derivatives and alternate colourways.

Objectives

This module aims to advance students' knowledge, understanding, and application of visual and contextual research for concept development that informs textile design for textile production. The digitisation of design work with integral production specifications supports the students’ choice(s) of 'route(s) to production' advancing the skills attained previously. Market and trend research will inform experimental developments, design decisions for commercial textile product solutions suited to the identified product(s) range.

The digitisation of artwork/design effectively using the range of software tools for CAD-CAM portfolio development, presentation, and visual maintaining of original artwork aesthetics. Utilising specialist textile processes and technologies including: print-colouration, digital print, weave and/or knit ensuring performance within product/market placement through the identification of appropriate textile testing/measurements. The interface between textile design and textile production documented within reflective commentary in context and practice underpinned by textile national and global industry research.

Learning outcomes
Students who have successfully completed the module will be able to demonstrate the following:
1. effectively employ visual, and market research, and analysis of to develop original design ideas and informed decisions within the context of resolved textile design outcome(s) for a specific product / market using appropriate equipment and methods;
2. effectively apply knowledge of textile specialisms, textile processes, fibre-yarn blends and finishing methods through experimentation and critical evaluation to inform design resolutions and production specifications in relation to identified product / market level;
3. demonstrate advanced competencies with digital programmes for the transfer/creation of design concepts/artwork complete with specification(s) for textile experimentation and developed designs for production;
4. demonstrate advanced knowledge with textile technology production principles in the completion of final design(s) associated specification(s) for a textile-material process driven portfolio;
5. demonstrate validity of material(s)-processes for commercial product applications employing appropriate textile assessment characterisation criteria for the textile format, product range and context.

Skills outcomes
· Investigate textile processes which extend technical knowledge and understanding;
· selection process of the textile design, textile technology for the textile product;
· textile design creation-production;
· aesthetic with functional properties;
· critically evaluate textile production routes-processes;

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored by:
1. regular attendance and participation in all taught classes (absences will be dealt with through the normal School channels);
2. verbal formative feedback in practical classe: individual and group tutorials, critique sessions will monitor design and skills development and participation in independent learning. Students will be encouraged to digitally record these discussions as a record of their feedback;
3. student self-assessment of progress will be conducted in sem2, week 4 and sem2, week 9 and verbal feedback will be given during these sessions; the students will document feedback given (signed off by the teaching team).
