Module summary

The students are invited to exploit the skills, knowledge and expertise they have accrued during Level 1 & 2 with regards to the management aspects of the programme, supplemented by additional targeted lectures and tutorials. They will develop the business case for the development of new products (or product ranges) for existing organisations. During the project the student will be expected to identify and analyse their chosen organisations, explore the current market using tools such as SWOT, STEPN,and the 4Ps, to identify opportunities for new products (or product ranges) and assess the competitive landscape. During the analysis they should be considering some of the key learning pillars of the programme such as marketing, innovation, price points, supply chain management, and sustainability. The output from Part A of this module will be used to form the basis for the project work in Part B.

Objectives

The module aims to develop and test a number of skills required for a career in product development by consolidating the learning from previous levels with specific focus on the fashion management pillar of the programme. The module aims to develop the students’ knowledge and proficiency in applying business analysis concepts and techniques.
In addition, the module aims to develop a number of important skills, including a professional approach, autonomy, interpersonal communication, self awareness & cooperative learning, an ability to approach multi-faceted & complex situations, and creative problem solving.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to demonstrate:
- a systematic understanding of key concepts of business and management in the context of the fashion industry;
- an ability to deploy established techniques of analysis and enquiry specific to business scenarios including analysis of marketing, costs, consumers and critical path;
- an ability to communicate information, ideas, problems and solution in a variety of ways;
- an ability to apply their knowledge and understanding of design and technology management concepts in order to initiate and carry out an extended project.

Skills outcomes
Ability to deploy established techniques of analysis and enquiry specific to business analysis;
Ability to deploy established communication techniques in the field of business analysis;
Ability to conform to professional norms.


Syllabus

In this module, the students’ knowledge of business, marketing and management of business processes in the fashion industry will be extended.

Using a mixture of lectures, tutorials and independent learning students will explore the process of business and product analysis that are used to identify new market opportunities within the fashion context.

The module will explore marketing, costs, consumer, supply chain and critical path aspects of the product development process leading to the creation of a report explaining the rationale for their decision making. They will also be required to present their finding via an assessed presentation and the preparation of a business case document for their ‘client’.

Private study

Each lecture is regarded as a signpost for further reading and enquiry, requiring an average of 5h of independent study per topic.
The undertaking of the project component of this module will require significant research time, as well as time compiling the assessed pieces (presentation and report – 100h).
Additional time for revision for the examination is also required (24h).

Student progress will be monitored through attendance at lectures and tutorials, engagement with the tutorial tasks and through a formative verbal presentation
