Module summary

This module requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and expertise they have accrued during Level 1 & 2, and further developed these through targeted seminars and tutorials, with specific focus on the fashion technology and product development aspects of the programme. The module will revolve around a project based on developing product ideas generated during Part A of Business Analysis and Product Development. The aim for the project is to create a detailed specification that clearly defines the product(s) and provides the necessary information for an imaginary supplier to manufacture the product(s). The student will be expected to create a full specification for the product(s), providing the rationale for the selection of raw materials, yarn and fabric types, processing routes and product construction etc. They will also be expected to identify the key performance requirements of the product(s) and identify the required standards and test methods used to assess the finished product(s); this will include management of colour. During the project the student will be expected to develop prototypes of their product(s) which will be submitted with their final report. The prototype(s) will be an alpha type and as such will not need to be correct for materials, construction, finishing etc.

Objectives

The module aims to develop the students' knowledge and proficiency in applying fashion technology and product development concepts and techniques.

In addition, the module aims to develop a number of important skills, including a professional approach, autonomy, interpersonal communication, self awareness & cooperative learning, an ability to approach multi-faceted & complex situations, and creative problem solving.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to demonstrate:
- a systematic understanding of key concepts of textiles and fashion technology, and an ability to apply their knowledge and understanding;
- an ability to deploy established techniques, adapt standard techniques and use creative problem solving in the field of textiles and fashion technology;
- an ability to communicate information, ideas, problems and solution in a variety of ways, including an ability to deploy fashion technology specific established communication techniques;
- an ability to conform to professional norms in the field of fashion technology;
- an ability to use their knowledge and understanding of fashion technology to critically evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data, to make judgements, and to frame appropriate questions to identify a solution(s) to a fashion technology problem;
- an ability to review, consolidate and extend their knowledge and understanding in the field of fashion technologyand use this as a basis for personal development.

Skills outcomes
Ability to deploy established techniques of analysis and enquiry specific to fashion technology;
Ability to deploy established communication techniques in the field of fashion technology;
Ability to conform to professional norms in fashion technology.

Syllabus

In this module, students will develop their knowledge and proficiency in fashion technology through the development of products (or product ranges) for their target organisation. They will implement a product development process and learn to select the appropriate materials, construction and finishing required to create products that are fit for purpose. They will learn how to prepare a full specification pack that would allow an imaginary supplier to manufacture the product, and determine the testing and quality management requirements.
