Module summary
The module is designed to enable students to become more independent in visual studies and research for multidisciplinary textile design practice. This module will focus on developing the student’s critical thinking and visual judgement through studio practice and related textile technologies.Objectives
The objective of this module is to develop the student’s visual and research skills to a professional standard. Students will gain a greater understanding of the creative and commercial considerations needed for multidisciplinary textile design practice. For example, the use of appropriate art and design research sources and the application of suitable textile materials; techniques and technologies. The module will build on their critical writing skills resulting in a written commentary based on all aspects of their studio practice. It will also address the preparation of art and design work for exhibition and presentation in public and commercial contexts.Learning outcomes
1. Establish and sustain an independent practice in multi-disciplinary textile design.
2. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the design process through visual research, design development and application.
3. Relate their work and that of others to studio practice and technologies in a written studio commentary.
4. Explore appropriate methods of display/exhibition and portfolio presentation for public and commercial contexts.
Skills outcomes
Creative practice skills including knitted, woven and printed textiles. Visual studies to include: collage, colour mixing drawing; laser cutting; object making; painting; photography and printmaking and digital media.
Syllabus
Indicative content of the module:
- expands the student's skills in visual studies and research from levels 1 and 2;
- establishing an effective professional practice in textile design based;
- research and design developments based on historical and contemporary art and design sources;
- develop visual and written design intentions in a creative environment.

Private Study and Independent Learning- Reading for lectures and studio sessions (20 hours)
- Preparation of reference and written studio commentary in context (30 hours)
- Preparation of portfolio (180 hours)
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored by:1. Students will receive regular tutorial guidance with verbal feedback during the studio sessions.
2. Students will be required to attend two peer critiques per semester. The critiques will provide a formal opportunity to view and comment on each other's work.
3. Students will receive written feedback on creative practice and written commentary at the end of semester 1
