Module summary

This module is designed to enable students to use their individual design practice, textile-technology skills and knowledge for multidisciplinary textiles for identified product / market. Whilst maturing analytical evaluations to determine a combination or singular textile specialist areas appropriate to the identified product(s) / market.

Objectives

This module synthesises the knowledge and skills to date in years 1&2 to develop a commercially focused research project (developed by the student) and concluding industry-portfolio. Students will gain a greater understanding of contextual issues, responsible design, and commercially sustainable design informing their multidisciplinary textile design practice. The module provides the framework to the individually composed brief through the consolidation of visual and design research.

The industry-portfolio includes, although not exclusive to: textile-material design practice developments and sampling; production specifications (both manual and CAD); textile-technology-process experimentations. The final textile range for product(s)/market collection will be analytical evaluated, professionally presented, and ultimately creatively independent

Learning outcomes
1. establish rationale for testing materials for product / market applications; including performance-related properties such as durability and wear;
2. understanding and sensitivity towards contextual issues, responsible design, commercially sustainable design, globalisation, and business ethics within a changing environment;
3. exploit visual research and development within the context of chosen textile technology-process specialism(s);
4. apply knowledge, skills and development for textile-material range for an identified commercial product / market.

Skills outcomes
Consolidate manual and digital design practice skills with textile technology-process knowledge in producing textile-materials for product / market applicable to the textiles industry.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored by:
1. Regular attendance to contact sessions and engagement with independent research project;
2. Students will receive regular tutorial guidance with verbal feedback during the practical sessions 1&2
3. Students will receive verbal formative feedback during two tutorials in Sem 1, and tutorial in Sem 2. Students will be required to attend the three formative feedback sessions with their work to date as a formal opportunity to view and comment on each other’s work and from the module tutors;
4. Students will attend an individual formal tutorial during Semester 2, week 1 to finalise their research project. Receiving verbal formative feedback the student will be required to take notes and return these in a structured written format in the template provided, signed and returned to the module lead
