Pre-requisite qualifications
Students must discuss their application with the School’s Study Abroad Co-ordinator and secure a place at a participating university abroad through a competitive process. Further information can be found on the Student Education Service website under “Study Abroad”This module is not approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This module provides the student with a valuable period of study in a foreign university. The period will enhance their academic studies and also provide experience of living and studying within a different social and cultural environment.Objectives
Theis module offers students a rewarding and life changing opportunity to explore the world. Students study in a foreign nation, discover different cultures and enhance their career prospects.Learning outcomes
The actual experience of the year abroad will vary widely from one student to another, dependent on the university attended and the individual host city and country.
Skills outcomes
The modules/courses taken whilst abroad will vary from one student to another, dependent of those available at each host university. Students are expected to develop the following skills during their year abroad.
- Discover a new culture and develop your intercultural skills
- Life experience and personal development
- Learn/improve a language
- New academic perspective and breadth of experience
- Employability skills and work experience
Syllabus
The modules/courses taken whilst abroad will vary from one student to another, dependent of those available at each host university.
Students are advised on their module choice prior to initial application, at registration and, if necessary, by e-mail at any point during the year. Students must complete a learning contract before they depart to indicate they are aware of the basic requirements of the module.
Outgoing Leeds students are required to keep a log of their experiences during the year.

Private study
Students will be taught by their host universities. The modules/courses taken whilst abroad will vary from one student to another.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Monitoring should be implemented at the host institution.- The Leeds co-ordinator should maintain regular e-mail contact and where financially possible, visit the student in the foreign institution. The student should submit an entry to their blog every month (minimum 400 words & 2 images).
- The student will also be expected to participate in their own development and articulation of skills with the Keynote Personal Development Plan.
- The student should submit a written reflective report (2 A4 pages) on their total experience in their first semester (September to January) to their home supervisor. Guidance will be given for the criteria for the LCGI before the student leaves the home institution.

This is a pass/fail grading based module. The student should 1) pass at least 2/3 of chosen modules in the host university. 2) submit a written reflective report on their total experience to their home supervisor in their first semester (September to January) after return to Leeds.
