Module summary
This is a 10 credit module that each week explores a different issue relating to caring for an adult patient who is critically ill. Issues discussed include witnessed resuscitation, sudden death, inter and intra hospital transport of patients, influences of the environment and the importance of families in the support of the critically ill patient. At the request of previous students caring for the patient who is experience Mental Health issues in an acute environment has recently been included in the sessions. The sessions are delivered via a lecture/seminar format and student participation regarding clinical experiences/reflections are actively encouraged. The assessment is a 2,500 word essay critically evaluating a challenge in clinical practice (witnessed by the student)Objectives
- To critically examine the role of the nurse and his/her impact on family care in the critical care area;- to appraise and analyse the holistic approach to care delivery;
- to analyse the different methods of assessment and care delivery systems in critical care;
- to evaluate the challenges of pain management for the critical care nurse;
- to critically review the impact of complementary therapies within critical care;
- to analyse the impact of resuscitation, sudden death and organ donation for both families and professionals;
- to appraise and analyse the effects of long-term care on the patient, family and professional;
- to evaluate the impact of technology and documentation for the critical care nurse.
Syllabus
Holistic care delivery within critical care and consideration of different care environments; assessment, nursing models/care delivery systems within the critical care area; pain management; sudden death and the impact on professionals and families; resuscitation; organ donation; complementary therapies and their uses in critical care nursing; family centred care and the effect/role of the professional; long-term care in critical care; documentation, technology and computerisation.
