Module summary
This module addresses and prepares students for issues that a graduate may face as a new dental registrant. It builds upon the content of the previous Personal and Professional Development modules with a focus on personal development planning. The module also includes an update of regulatory factors relevant to ionising radiation and General Dental Council. Students develop their interview skills and prepare a Professional Development Plan in readiness for future employment.Objectives
This module builds on the contents of the previous Personal and Professional Development modules, with the focus on preparing the student for graduation and registration as a dental therapist with the General Dental Council as a dental professional.The module will allow the students to reflect on their present level of knowledge and skills to identify their individual personal development requirements for continual professional development following graduation.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and critically engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.
2. Demonstrate and develop independent and reflective learning with a clear understanding of career and personal development.
3. Apply the legal and ethical responsibilities of registered dental professionals to the world of work.
Skills outcomes
Recognise and demonstrate understanding of the role of self, the dental profession and fellow healthcare professionals in patient care
Recognise the importance of lifelong learning and personal development planning
Knowledge and understanding of the IRMER regulations related to dentistry
Syllabus
The content of this module revisits some topics introduced earlier in the programme exploring and applying them in greater detail. In addition new and relevant topics will prepare the students for graduation and their future career.

• Legislation regarding Ionising radiation and the practice of dentistry
• Employment law
• Career Pathways
• Current research within dentistry and audit
• Ethics
• Business and management skills

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students are provided with formative feedback throughout the module. Students with particular difficulties with their progress during the module are encouraged to seek advice from the modular team. Students will receive feedback on their draft personal development plan.Seminar participation will gauge general progress and allow identification of any learning issues that need immediate attention.
In-course formative MCQ will include provision of formative feedback to students based on individual performance.
Group feedback will be provided on the summative in course MCQ and individual feedback can be provided on request.

The summative MCQ assessment will relate to statutory requirements covered within the module and will take the form of scenario questions and situational judgement tests. Submission of a satisfactory personal development plan is a progressional component of the module and will identify the student’s future learning needs and prepare them for continuing personal development as a dental professional. Online time limited assessment with a duration of 48 hours.
