Module summary

This, the fourth module on Personal and Professional Development, focuses upon teamworking, leadership and management of the dental team. The ethical concept of trust is considered in depth. You will practise independent, critical reflection on your dental team working. This will be assessed via a 1,500-word essay.In addition, you will attend a career pathways symposium. The symposium covers Dental Foundation Training and the varied career pathways open to the newly qualified dentist.

Objectives

This module enables you to critically reflect upon your clinical teamworking experiences. It also helps you to increase your ethical awareness and to explore the role of trust in dental team working. Finally, it gives you the opportunity to explore future career options.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, the students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- Engage in reflective learning by raising ethical concerns in relation to teamwork and trust
- Demonstrate good communication with other health professionals
- Show independent, critical ability in solving problems

Syllabus

PPD4 focuses upon leadership, management and trust within the dental team. It uses reflective learning to explore the role of the dentist as a member of a wider healthcare team. Significantly, this module operates at M level reflecting the clinical and professional competences associated with the graduating dental surgeon.

The introductory lectures are followed by two interactive seminars, led by interdisciplinary ethics tutors, where teamworking and trust are explored in greater depth. Relevant ethical duties, such as raising concerns, are explored via the lectures, seminars, and reflective learning exercises.

You log your own critical clinical teamworking incidents, and draw upon them for a reflective essay. This assignment challenges you to demonstrate creative and novel solutions to problems.

Finally, a career pathways symposium helps you to explore different career pathways for the newly qualified dentist and to learn about the Dental Foundation Training process.

Private study

There is a module reading list to help you prepare for the lectures, seminars and reflective essay. The lectures are also made available on the VLE for consultation. However, the key elements of independent learning are maintaining a reflective log, choosing three key incidents in clinical teamworking and reflecting upon those incidents in your essay.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The essay is summatively assessed with individual feedback. You also have the opportunity to contact the module leader with queries or concerns.
